Car-show prep is easier when you work from the dirtiest jobs to the finishing touches. This checklist helps you plan a clean, polished presentation without rushing a protection product on the morning of the show.

A few days before: wash and inspect
- Wash from top to bottom. Rinse loose grit first, use a suitable car shampoo and clean wash mitt, then dry with clean microfiber towels.
- Clean the wheels and tires. Use products intended for those surfaces and separate brushes or mitts so brake dust doesn't reach the paint.
- Inspect in good light. Look for water spots, bonded contaminants, or swirl marks. Only correct paint if you have the right tools, product directions, and enough time to do it safely.
Before show day: choose your finish
Choose wax if you enjoy the traditional gloss and can refresh it as needed, or consider a coating if you have time for its preparation and curing requirements. Show day: the small details
- Use a clean microfiber towel and an appropriate detail spray for light dust, following the label. If the vehicle is gritty, wash it rather than wiping grit across the paint.
- Check glass, mirrors, trim, badges, and door edges for streaks or residue.
- Give tires and wheels a final visual check, and avoid transferring dressing onto paint or the ground.
- Pack clean towels for touch-ups at the venue.
