Oxidation is the enemy of every boat owner. That chalky, faded, dull gelcoat that makes an older boat look tired and neglected? That's UV oxidation — and Cap'n Cut is the marine compound that cuts through it. Formulated specifically for gelcoat and fiberglass, Cap'n Cut removes heavy oxidation, surface scratches, water stains, and years of weathering to restore the deep, vibrant color and gloss that your boat had when it first hit the water.
At Chicago Jax Wax, Cap'n Cut is the first step in our full marine restoration process. Whether you're bringing a neglected hull back to life or prepping a well-maintained boat for a fresh coat of Marine Coating, Cap'n Cut does the heavy lifting — cutting through surface damage and leaving a clean, smooth foundation for the finishing steps that follow.
What It Removes
- Heavy oxidation & chalking — the primary cause of dull, faded gelcoat on aging boats
- Surface scratches & scuffs — light to moderate scratches from docking, trailering, and normal use
- Water stains & mineral deposits — stubborn waterline staining and hard water marks
- UV damage & discoloration — restores color depth and clarity to sun-damaged gelcoat
- Old wax & sealant buildup — strips away degraded protection to reveal fresh gelcoat beneath
How to Use
- Wash the boat thoroughly with Boat Wash and allow to dry completely
- Apply Cap'n Cut to a foam cutting pad or marine polishing pad
- Work into the surface using a dual-action or rotary polisher at medium speed, or by hand for small areas
- Work in overlapping passes until oxidation is removed and the surface becomes clear and glossy
- Wipe away residue with a clean microfiber towel
- Follow with Cap'n Polish to refine the finish, then protect with Marine Coating
Pro tip: Test Cap'n Cut on a small, inconspicuous area first to gauge the level of cut needed. For light oxidation, Cap'n Polish alone may be sufficient. For heavy chalking and severe oxidation, Cap'n Cut followed by Cap'n Polish delivers the best restoration result.
